Carnations

Carnations come in a wide array of colors and forms and have a pleasant scented fragrance and a long vase life. For this reason Carnations are some the most common cut flowers worldwide and easiest to maintain.

Florists value them for their sustaining quality and ability to rehydrate after long transportation. Florists often use Carnations in many of their floral arrangements and mixed bouquets for these reasons.

General care tips for fresh cut Carnations.

  • Start of by having a thoroughly clean vase to minimize bacteria. Some florists' say that an aspirin or a little bleach will help eliminate bacteria but there is still no evidence to support those theories and thus still considered wives tails.
  • Fill the vase ¾ full with lukewarm water. Never use cold as it will quickly reduce the life span of your Carnations.
  • Your flowers may come with flower food or preservatives. Add the flower food as the directions on the packet indicate. Flower food provides essential nutrients, kills bacteria and balances the pH levels.
  • Remove any leaves or flower foliage below water level to guard against additional sources of bacteria. Keeping your water clean is crucial to maintaining fresh cut flowers of any kind.
  • In a sink or medium size bucket filled with water, place the Carnation stems under water and cut approximately 1' off the bottom of each stem on an angle. Cutting a fresh edge in water prevents an air bubble from forming at the base of the stem, which can make it more difficult for flowers to absorb water. Cutting on angle provides the largest surface area for the stem to drink water.
  • Immediately place you're freshly cut Carnations into the prepared water.
  • Check the water level every often to make sure the vase is ¾ full and repeat these steps every 3-4 days.
  • Always keep your flowers in a cool, dry place and never in the path of direct sunlight, or under an air conditioner. Avoid extreme temperatures at all times. The proper temperature is crucial to a flower's lifespan.

By following this guide you will easily maximize the life of your fresh cut Carnations. Whether you use a florists online or a local one, a bouquet of fresh cut carnations can turn a simple table into a gorgeous sight.
