How to Care for Fresh Cut Roses
Flower Care: You should be able to enjoy fresh
cut roses for seven to 10 days by following these easy
tips.
Roses are a joy to behold whether in your garden or in a bouquet.
With a little care you can keep your fresh cut roses looking
bright and beautiful. There a few simple tips that you can follow
that will help you care for your fresh cut roses.
Florist roses are bred to last a long time in a vase, while
garden roses may have a shorter vase life without proper care.
In general, antique roses do not last as long as hybrid teas.
Roses such as Crystalline, and Kardinal roses, were originally
florist roses, so they have a longer vase life.
After bringing home your fresh cut roses, you will need to
do several things to keep your fresh cut roses looking fresh
for an extended period of time.
- For starters if you don't have a vase to put your roses
in you will need one large enough to hold your roses. Make
sure your vase has been cleaned thoroughly with soap and hot
water. Dirty vases will accumulate bacteria that will damage
and deteriorate your fresh cut roses.
- You may want to cut your rose stems at the bottom if they
aren't already. Cut 1 to 2 inches off the stem with a sharp
knife or shears at an angle so that they do not sit flat on
the bottom of the vase, which could impede water uptake.
- As a precaution you may need to re-cut the rose stems again
under the water to eliminate any air bubbles that can decrease
the flower life of your fresh cut roses.
- After you have selected your vase add some fresh flower
food to lukewarm water in the vase. You should use warm water
and not hot or cold water. Warm water will speed up the flowers
ability to absorb the flower food. Follow the directions of
the floral food packet so you know how much floral food to
add. You may need to use more than one package of floral food
if your vase is very large.
- Arrange the fresh cut roses in the vase with the floral
food and warm water. The floral food should last several days
so be prepared to add more floral food later.
- Your fresh cut roses will need to be watered often, perhaps
daily. Bacteria can build in old water so adding fresh water
will help extend the life of your fresh cut roses.
If you follow these easy tips to maintaining fresh cut
roses, you can enjoy your bouquet of cut roses for several
days.
