How to Care for Your Iris Bouquet
Irises are one of the early spring flowers and blossom in a
wide variety of colors and are distinguishable by their colorful
floral blooms. Of the more than 200 distinctive looking species
of irises you will find them in a variety of vibrant unique
color. The word iris is actually derived from the Greek work
rainbow which embodies much of the iris plant species.
Irises are great as garden plants or as a bouquet of flowers.
A bouquet of Irises can add elegance to your living spaces and
give off a fresh fragrance. When you order a bouquet of irises
follow these easy tips to keep your fresh cut Irises look vibrant
for weeks.
Iris Delivery and Care
- Remove any leaves that may be under water.
- While holding the stems under water in a sink or under running
water, cut about one inch off each stem with a sharp knife
or shears. DO NOT let the newly cut end dry off before transferring
it back to your arrangement or other container.
- Water to which a good floral preservative has been added
is the best solution in which to arrange fresh cut iris. Using
it as recommended will provide additional days of vase life.
Avoid using water from a water softener.
- Immediately after the stems are cut, place your iris in
a clean, deep vase of warm preservative solution (a bout 100
degrees F). If possible leave them in a cool dark room or
refrigerator to 'condition' for 2 or 3 hours after arranging.
- Be careful! DO NOT bump the tips of your iris.
- Temperature is key to the lifespan of flowers. Display your
fresh cut iris arrangements in a cool area out of direct sunlight
and drafts, to extend lifespan.
- Iris are thirsty flowers. It is important to check to see
that the vase is full and add preservative solution often.
Be sure foam materials are completely saturated and the container
is full daily.
Current Historical Significance of Irises
The iris is the emblem of both France and Florence, Italy.
The fleur-de-lis, one of the most well-known of all symbols,
is derived from the shape of the iris flower. The fleur-de-lis
is a symbol of the royal family in France and is the state flower
of Tennessee.
