Keep Your Fresh Flowers Looking Fresh

Share |

One of the questions most often asked when people buy fresh flowers is - how do I make them last a long time. The simple answer is that flowers are living things and must be cared for to keep them fresh as the day you bought them. Keeping fresh flowers watered properly is perhaps one of the most important aspects of maintaining your fresh flowers.

Florists will often provide you with flower food packets to add to the water to go with your flower arrangements. Plant food solutions provide flowers with nutrients not only to keep fresh cut flowers healthy, but to allow them to continually develop and maintain color as well. If you don’t see any flower food packets with your fresh flowers don’t worry, because you can always just make sure that the water is very clean by dumping the water, and replacing it with fresh water, not adding clean water to dirty water.

Follow these helpful tips to keep your flowers looking great:

  • Keep fresh flowers looking their best by changing the water every two to three days if you can.

  • Cut the stems every two to three days one or two inches before you add fresh water. You will find they last much longer. Cut the fresh flowers at an angle so they have more room to soak up water.

  • Put your flowers in lukewarm water and keep the out of direct sunlight or anywhere in the house where it is likely to be warm like the kitchen.

  • Equally you don’t want them under or in front of your air conditioner. You can keep them in a cool place but you don’t want them to be in extreme cold conditions.

  • If you think your fresh flowers are in trouble add some floral food. You can buy it from your local florist shop or anyplace that might sell garden supplies.

  • Peel bad petals off that are turning brown or wilting. A lot of times even if your flowers don't look good by peeling just some of the bad petals off they'll last a lot longer.

  • If you have a water spray bottle, spray the fresh flowers on the top as another way of providing water.

Yet there are some other methods that florist swear by while other florists dismiss them as old wives tails. Some florists believe that by adding aspirin to the water helps keep the water acidic. Other methods include adding a penny, or some 7up to the water to reduce bacteria that builds over time in the water.

If any of those methods makes you scratch your head then go with the tried and true methods listed above. By following these easy tips you can keep beautiful fresh flowers for a long time.
