Iris BouquetThe iris has long been a symbol of mythology dating back to the Ancient Greeks. The goddess Iris, who personified the rainbow (the Greek word for iris), acted as the link between heaven and earth as ancient mythology goes.

It’s also said that purple irises were planted over the graves of women to summon the goddess Iris to guide them in their journey to heaven. Irises have been linked to the French monarchy during the Middle Ages, eventually being recognized as their national symbol, the fleur-de-lis.

The February birth flower, the 25th wedding anniversary flower and the state flower of Tennessee, the iris’s three upright petals are said to symbolize faith, valor and wisdom.

 

Symbolic Meaning of Irises

Irises have come to symbolize different emotions like faith, hope, wisdom, courage, and admiration. It also has become associated with the twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.

Blue Iris: Faith, hope.
Purple Iris: Wisdom, compliments.
Yellow Iris: Passion.
White Iris: Purity.

Iris gets its name from the Greek word rainbow becuase of it's wide variety of colors found among the many species. Iris is a genus of between 200–300 species of flowering plants. The are most recognized by there large pertruding curving petals.

Yellow Irises have been widely used in water purification. The roots are usually planted in a substrate (e.g. lava-stone) in a reedbed-setup. The roots then improve water quality by consuming nutrient pollutants, such as from agricultural runoff.
